This year will be my 40thyear in the Turf Industry. I got my first job on a golf course in San Angelo, TX in 1978, and I loved it so much that I decided to make a career in the golf business. I worked on a total of 14 different golf courses between 1978 and 2012 including the courses that I oversaw as a regional superintendent. I really enjoy interacting with other superintendents and being active in my local and state associations. I have always tried to focus on the quality of playing conditions and turf health first, with the expectation that the club would benefit from these efforts and become successful financially. I hope that I have had a positive influence on the many turf students that worked for me and then continued in the industry. When I was a student I really liked the freedom of being out on the golf course, especially first thing in the mornings, and the variety of different tasks that we were performing. Never a dull moment! On Saturday mornings these days I am at the tennis courts trying to regain some of my old skills. One thing people don’t know about me is how much I like noisy rock and roll, especially live. I hope to be remembered as a mentor, a knowledgeable resource and someone that was lucky enough to find a career that he really enjoyed.
