Excalibur™ Surfactant Research: Proven Root Mass, Drought Tolerance & Turf Performance

Stronger Roots Start in the Rhizosphere

The rhizosphere is where moisture availability, nutrient exchange, microbial activity, and root development all intersect. Managing this zone effectively is one of the most important factors in maintaining healthy turf during environmental stress.

In a Queensland rhizosphere trial conducted in 2020, Excalibur produced significantly greater root mass compared to five leading surfactants. The trial showed:

  • +2.7x greater root mass versus leading surfactants
  • 35% greater root mass over a season-long program compared to the untreated control

This increase in rooting is critical because stronger, healthier roots improve the plant’s ability to access water deeper in the soil profile, tolerate stress, and maintain consistent performance during dry-down periods.

For turf managers, deeper rooting often translates into:

  • Reduced hand watering
  • Improved moisture consistency
  • Better drought resilience
  • More uniform turf response
  • Increased firmness and playability

Improving Root Viability Under Drought Stress

Drought stress doesn’t only impact turf appearance above ground. It also directly affects root viability and overall plant health below the surface.

Plant physiology research conducted at Virginia Tech in 2022 evaluated Excalibur under drought stress conditions. The study found that Excalibur-treated turf demonstrated a 29.6% increase in root viability compared to drought-stressed control turf.

The research showed measurable improvements in root activity and plant response during periods of moisture and heat stress, reinforcing the importance of managing soil-water dynamics before visible symptoms begin to appear.

This is particularly important as many turf managers continue to face:

  • Extended dry periods
  • Increased irrigation restrictions
  • Elevated evapotranspiration demands
  • Poor-quality irrigation water
  • Greater pressure to maintain consistent playing conditions with less water

When roots remain healthier under stress, the entire turf system becomes more resilient.

Less Wilt. More Playability.

Surface consistency and turf quality are often judged by how turf responds during dry-down conditions.

In a 2021 dry-down study conducted by Dr. Bigelow, Excalibur demonstrated significantly lower wilt severity compared to two other industry surfactants.

The study measured the number of readings where wilt exceeded 5% plot area:

  • Untreated control: 15 readings
  • Industry surfactant Z: 8 readings
  • Industry surfactant R: 6 readings
  • Excalibur: 4 readings

Lower wilt severity means more than just improved visual appearance. It directly impacts:

  • Surface firmness
  • Ball roll consistency
  • Turf uniformity
  • Traffic tolerance
  • Reduced localized dry spot development

For golf course superintendents and sports turf managers, maintaining playable, consistent surfaces while reducing reactive watering is one of the biggest challenges during summer stress periods. Excalibur was developed to help manage exactly that.

Research-Backed Performance in the Field

Excalibur’s development has included:

  • 20+ universities and research partners
  • 30+ golf courses and field trials
  • Extensive real-world validation under varying environmental conditions

This research-first approach has long been a core focus of AQUA-AID Solutions. As water quality issues, drought pressure, and environmental demands continue to increase, turf managers need more than theoretical performance. They need proven results backed by measurable data.

Excalibur was engineered to help turf managers:

  • Optimize plant-available moisture
  • Improve rooting and stress tolerance
  • Maintain firmer, more playable surfaces
  • Reduce moisture inconsistency
  • Support healthier turf during drought and environmental stress

Proven Where It Matters

From university research facilities to elite golf courses, Excalibur continues to demonstrate measurable performance under real-world conditions.

Because in today’s environment, anyone can claim performance.

Proof is what matters.
